OTC Asthma inhaler to be discontinued

OTC Epinephrine Inhalers will be Phased-out

The US Food and Drug Administration announced that over the counter Epinephrine inhalers will no longer be available after December 31, 2011. The epinephrine inhalers use CFC propellants which harm the ozone. There are CFC-free inhalers that are more environmentally safe thus justifying the need to cease its production and sale. The ozone-safe CFC-free asthma inhalers can be obtained by prescription from your physician or allergist. Read more

FDA approves Allegra for OTC use

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Allegra® family of allergy medication products for over-the-counter (OTC) use in adults and children two years of age and older. Additionally, Allegra-D®, which also relieves nasal congestion and sinus pressure, will be available without a prescription at the pharmacy counter for use in adults and children 12 years of age and older. Asthma Continues to Afflict Millions

The CDC recently released their report on Asthma Statistics. The Highlights of the report include the following:

  • About 8.2% of the US population has asthma
  • That is 24.9 million people in the US
  • 17.4 million adults have asthma
  • 7.1 million children have asthma
  • 14.2 million lost work days were due to asthma
  • 10.5 million lost school days were due to asthma
